On the plane

The Avro York first flew on July 5 1942, and was produced as a transport version of the Lancaster bomber, using the same power-plants, undercarriage, mainplanes, and tail assembly. When production ceased in April 1948, 253 Yorks had been build, including Mr. (later Sir) Winston Churchill's "Ascalon" LV633, which was used as a wartime flying conference room.

More than two hundred examples of the Avro York served with the RAF to the Berlin
Airlift where they were used to Berlin-Gatow. KY-N represents an aircraft of No. 242 Squadron, one of eight squadrons and one Operational Conversion Unit of RAF Avro Yorks
on the Airlift.
The first 12 aircraft arrived at the airlift base at Wunsdorf on the evening of 1 July 1948 under the command of Wing Commander G.F.A. Skelton.

After the blockade many of the RAF Yorks found their way onto the British register.

The Avro York was also used in Berlin-Tempelhof at the end of the fifties / beginning of the sixties by different airlines like Skyways of London, Air Charter Ltd. and Dan-Air London.

VISIT FS BERLIN

The main theme of our webside is the Microsoft flight simulator (FS98/ FS2000/
FS2002) with special regards to Berlin airports - specially to Tempelhof
Central Airport but also to Gatow and Tegel). We will cover the period from
1945 until about 1990, that is, when the west part of Berlin was surrounded
by The Wall and when these airports stood under the command of the west allied
air forces (US Air Force, Royal Air Force and French Air Force). Along with the
world-famous Berlin Airlift this is probably the most exciting period in the
history of these airports.
We want to collect as many aircraft models as possible of such original
airplanes which landed on West-Berlin airports (in this period) and list
them in a comprehensive archive. And we want to repaint such aircraft models
and offer them for downloading.

Please note our newest repaintings:

Antonov An-2 Deutsche Lufthansa
C-47 US Air Force MATS
DC-3 BEA
DC-3 BOAC
DC-3 Swissair
DC-3 TWA
